Mr. Was was not conceived and written as a "kids book." I originally wrote the book for an adult audience, and as such it is quite complex both in terms of its narrative structure and its subject matter. It is not an easy reader. Suffice it to say that in terms of plotting, Mr Was is as brilliant as any time travel book should be. Equally brilliant is its clever choice of narrative format as a presentation of these notebooks (written by Jack or mostly by Jack) as a journalistic-type of story constructed as fact. Hautman (for adults, The Mortal Nuts, p. , etc.) combines the elements of mystery, science fiction, and domestic violence in his compelling and unrelentingly grim first novel for teenagers. When his grandfather Skoro dies, teenage Jack Lund and his mother journey to the old man's mansion in the aptly named town of Memory. It was difficult to follow in some parts because it jumped back and forth in time, but the premise is intriguing and the /5(37).
